Why are Pearls so associated with Weddings? Bridal Headpieces & Wedding Jewellery
June 19, 2020
Pearls are very often a popular wedding day gift for a bride, but why are pearls associated with weddings, you may be thinking!
Thanks to their fabulous shimmering iridescence, these organic little gems have always been highly prized throughout history, in fact, Cleopatra is said to have dissolved a pearl in a glass of wine before drinking it, simply to show Marc Antony that she could consume the wealth of an entire country in just one meal, and the ancient Greeks associated the pearl with love, marriage, and marital harmony. During the crusades knights wore pearls on the battlefield, believing they held magic powers that would protect them from harm. In the 1500s pearls were so highly regarded that countries across Europe passed laws forbidding anyone apart from nobility to wear them. And even to this day, they are still a popular choice for royalty, especially at weddings. Queen Elizabeth II wore them at her wedding and over in the USA, Jacqueline Bouvier wore a strand the day she became Mrs Kennedy, which was almost royalty.
Are you considering making pearls part of your wedding? When it comes time to make your pearl selection, what do you need to know? Let us help...
Stick To A Colour Palette...
If you’re planning a traditional wedding, then you’ll want to keep things traditional in the colour scheme as well. We all know that bridal pearls are white BUT there is much more to the selection process than simply picking a pair of white pearls. Pure white pearls, work well with bright white dresses, or tones of silver and platinum, whereas off white pearls are well matched to cream dresses. It is important to look at small details like the clasp as the metal used should complement the rest of your ensemble, gold for cream dresses and silver, white gold, or platinum for all other tones, the Alyson, Rhinestone & Pearl Pendant is a good example.
Mirror The Neckline Of The Dress...
Do you have a complex neckline on your wedding dress? Yes! Perfect, then there are many choices available to you. The key is to choose a necklace that reflects the neckline of your dress. If you have a low deep neckline, you may want to choose a pearl necklace that is made up of more than one strand. Or for a shallow, swooping neckline then you’ll want to stick with a single strand, but it is important to make sure that the necklace doesn’t overlap the dress in any way. Or if you have a V-shaped neckline on your dress, then a pearl pendant will be a better option, as it will more closely follow your neckline and can be combined with other gemstones like diamonds, a girl’s, and a bride’s best friend.
Try Some Alternatives…
Even though pearls are a traditional choice, you don’t have to use them in a traditional manner. Headpieces are a great way of including pearls in your wedding day, with the string od pearls option. Or you could opt for a pretty sash to lift a plain dress and add that timeless pearl element, as you can see with our Giorgia Ivory, Beaded & Embellished Sash.
As you have seen bridal pearls hold a special place in wedding history and are a special purchase that you’ll want to give much thought to before choosing. Follow the steps we’ve detailed above and you’ll end up with a beautiful piece of jewellery that you can wear confidently as you walk down the aisle on your big day.
Wedding hair vines are very on trend this year, but if you are asking yourself “What’s a wedding hair vine?”, let us explain. Wedding hair vines are long, flexible head pieces made on thin twisted wire that can be shaped to any design required to suit your hairstyle. Wedding hair vines generally don’t have any combs attached to them and can easily be pinned into your hair wherever needed. This gives them the flexibility to be worn with many different hairstyles.
So, how should you wear your wedding hair vine...
First, decide on how you will be wearing your hair; will you be wearing your hair down, in a long loose braid? Hair vines also look fantastic in half up half down hairstyles. Simply secure into the section of your hair that is pinned up, and then gentle curve down through your loose waves. If you are wearing your hair in a loose plait, the hair vine can simply be plaited into your hair as it is done.
As we mentioned hair vines are a very big trend for this year and here are our top selling wedding hair vines for 2020 so far...
